The Aviation Detachment of the 72nd Airborne Division, known as 'ACE', is comprised of a small, specially-select group of aviators and crew members that conduct a variety of mission-critical tasks that directly support troops on the ground. The range of support covers logistics, transport, and close air support and is conducted on rotary and fixed-wing aircraft.

Soldiers interested in aviation must volunteer and complete an interview with aviation command. If selected, the soldier begins the aviator pipeline that begins as a crew chief and progresses through the ranks of warrant officer candidate to fully-fledged aviator.
